Television Years: Expansion And Growth

CBS’s involvement in television dates back to the opening of experimental station W2XAB in New York City on July 21, 1931, using the system that had more or less been perfected in the late 1920s. Its initial broadcast featured New York mayor , , and . The station boasted the first regular seven-day broadcasting schedule in American television, broadcasting 28 hours a week.

Announcer-director Bill Schudt was the station’s only paid employee all other talent was volunteer. W2XAB pioneered program development including small-scale dramatic acts, monologues, pantomime, and the use of projection slides to simulate sets. Engineer Bill Lodge devised the first synchronized sound wave for a television station in 1932, enabling W2XAB to broadcast picture and sound on a single shortwave channel instead of the two previously needed. On November 8, 1932, W2XAB broadcast the first television coverage of presidential election returns. The station suspended operations on February 20, 1933, as monochrome television transmission standards were in flux, and in the process of changing from a mechanical to an all-electronic system. W2XAB returned to the air with an all-electronic system in 1939 from a new studio complex in and a transmitter atop the , broadcasting on channel 2. W2XAB transmitted the first color broadcast in the United States on August 28, 1940.

Betty White Says This Is The Reason The Golden Palace Didnt Succeed

In a 1997 conversation with the Archive of American Television, the 98-year-old star gave her take on the spin-offs failure.

It sounded like a marvelous idea, White said. These cloistered women whod been living in their nest, in their house, sell the house because Dorothy gets married. They buy a hotel in Florida, one of these art deco modern hotels. And they have to get out of that sequestered situation and face life as it comes in off the street, through the lobby of the hotel. Its a whole new world for them, which would be interesting.

Here, White explained her perspective on what limited the show from succeeding.

Problem was, we had the same writers, the Hot in Cleveland star said. And if a script began to not fall together, theyd give one or other of us a monologue and pretty soon we were doing Golden Girls in the lobby.

The show was not renewed after its premiere season.

And I think thats why we only went a year. It was too much trying to do the same old Golden Girls without the balance of the show. The idea was sound, but the writers werent ready for it.

Broadcast History And Reception

The Golden Palace aired on CBS-TV, changing networks from NBC-TV, which had aired The Golden Girls on Saturday nights for its entire run. Susan Harris, Paul Junger Witt and Tony Thomas all pitched their Golden Girls successor series to NBC in early 1992, as a way to continue the saga of Blanche, Rose and Sophia after Bea Arthur’s departure from the role of Dorothy. NBC entertainment chief Warren Littlefield originally committed to airing The Golden Palace, with a 13-episode order for the 1992-93 season. However, CBS soon entered the picture and fueled a bidding war for the new series, offering a full season order. Witt, Thomas and Harris tried to get Littlefield to improve his NBC deal, but he refused to extend his episode order, citing that the declining ratings of The Golden Girls in its seventh season made it risky to give the sequel a longer commitment. The producers thus went with CBS, who agreed to market The Golden Palace as a show with its own voice separate from that of its parent show.

Twenty-four episodes of the series are known to have been taped. In some versions of Disney-ABC Domestic Television’s syndicated packaging of the series, The Golden Palace has aired as part of The Golden Girls syndication library.

The Best Ever Moments From The Golden Girls Plus All The Famous Guest Stars

Bea Arthur said that one of her favorite scenes was with Estelle Getty where they dressed as Sonny and Cher and sang I Got You Babe. Meanwhile Rue McClanahans favourite episode was a series seven episode in which Dorothy uncharacteristically becomes popular at The Rusty Anchor, Blanches favorite place for meeting men, while Blanche seductively sings I Want to Be Loved by You on top of a grand piano!

As well as Leslie Nielsen and Dick Van Dyke, other guest stars throughout the series included Burt Reynolds, Sonny Bono, Bob Hope, Mickey Rooney,Quentin Tarantino and even a young George Clooney.

The Golden Girls Cast Estelle Getty As Sophia Petrillo

The Golden Palace

Known for her wisecracks, put-downs and brazen remarks, Dorothys mum Sophia was a favourite with the shows fans. Sophia initially moved into the Miami house after her Shady Pines retirement home was damaged in a fire. Born in Sicily she believes strongly in ancient Sicilian traditions, including the power of the “Sicilian curse”, which she often threatens to cast on Dorothy. There are also regular hints that she and her family have mafia connections.

Like her co-star Bea Arthur, Estelle was a New Yorker, who starred in various theatre plays before landing a role in Broadway show Torch Song Trilogy, playing Mrs Beckoff. It was this role that brought her to the attention of the creators of The Golden Girls who cast her as Dorothys fast-talking no-nonsense mother Sophia. Younger than her on-screen daughter, Estelle relied on wigs and heavy make-up to age her. While filming the Golden Girls she also appeared in Fantasy Island, Cagney and Lacey, Tootsie and Mask.

Cbs Musical Instruments Division

Forming the CBS Musical Instruments division, the company also acquired Fender , Electro-Music Inc. , , pianos , flutes, harps , organs, and home organs. The company’s last musical instrument manufacturer purchase was its 1981 acquisition of the assets of then-bankrupt , a developer of electronic synthesizers.

It is widely held that the quality of Fender guitars and amplifiers declined significantly between 1965 and 1985, outraging Fender fans. Because of this, CBS Musical Instruments division executives executed a leveraged buyout in 1985, and created Fender Musical Instruments Corporation. At the same time, CBS divested itself of Rodgers, along with Steinway and Gemeinhardt, all of which were purchased by holding company Steinway Musical Properties. The other musical instrument manufacturing properties were also liquidated.

CBS made a brief, unsuccessful move into film production in the late 1960s, when they created . The studio released such films as the 1969 drama and the 1970 musical . This profitless unit was shut down in 1972 the distribution rights to the Cinema Center library today rest with Paramount Pictures for home video and theatrical release, and with CBS Television Distribution for television syndication most other ancillary rights remain with CBS.

Was There A Golden Girls Spin

Yes, The Golden Girls spawned two spin-offs. Golden Palace lasted one season and followed Sophia, Blanche and Rose as they renovated an abandoned hotel with the help of Cheech Marin and Don Cheadle.
