Gold coins win for those investors who appreciate the historical value of these coins. If you want your gold to be something more than simply a financial investment, perhaps even start a gold coin collection, then coins are for you.

Of course, there is additional economic value to the historic value of gold coins that many coin collectors, or specialised investors will pay a healthy premium for. Gold coins are minted in continuing annual series, meaning that they often increase in value over time, as collectors wishing to complete their collection will pay increasingly more money for older variants. The British gold Sovereign coin and gold Britannia coin are examples of this with new, annual versions of the coin being minted each year.

The value of gold coins is more difficult to quantify against the live gold spot price. The coins values will rise with the price of gold. But there is a further value to be found in their increased levels of rarity if youre selling to coin collectors or investors seeking to complete a series or find a specific year that carries importance to them. Of course, this value is likely to increase with time as the coins from older years become harder to find. This additional, Numismatic value is difficult to quantify and is likely to vary over time as collectors tastes and targets change.

Rare Date Gold Coins Shine

Rare date U.S. gold coins fared well in public and private sales during the first four months of 2021 and have been ahead of rare date silver and copper U.S. coins, some prices of which have been going down. I am not referring to Great Rarities or the rarest gold coins. I am referring to coins that are rare in comparison to other coins of the same type. Some rare date coins are rare in all grades. Most are comparatively rare, and others are condition rarities.

A 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent is not rare. Tens of thousands are around. It is as comparatively rare as all other Lincoln cents, except particular errors and early Proofs are much more common.

Find The Melt Value Of Your Gold Coins

If you were to melt down your gold coin collection, how much would be pure gold? Perhaps not as much as you think: many gold coins are cut with low-value metals zinc, for instance, costs a mere six cents per ounce it would take two million ounces of zinc to equal the value of one ounce of gold. Your gold coins are worth their melt value, or the pure gold left over after melting the coin and removing other metals. When you sell gold, you often sell by the spot price per troy ounce multiplied by AGW. Those wondering how to sell gold coins that are old or even ancient should know that the intrinsic or historical value nearly always outweighs the melt value never settle on the melt value if the coin is old. Nevertheless, the melt value is always the lowest you should accept. Coin databases like NGCs often contain the melt value of common gold coins.

Zimbabwes Central Bank Says Gold Coins Will Store Value

  • Monetary Policy Committee resolved to introduce gold coins as an instrument to store value
  • Zimbabwes inflation increased to 30.7 per cent on a month-on-month basis in June 2022
  • The bank policy rate increased from 80 per cent to 200 per cent per annum

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe said it will be introducing gold coins as part of measures to ensure investors and the general public have alternative means to preserve value.

In a press statement on Sunday, RBZ Governor Dr. John Mangudya said the Monetary Policy Committee had noted the increase in inflation with concern as it was stifling consumer demand and confidence, an undesirable position that has the potential to derail economic strides attained in the economy over the past two years.

The latest figures from the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency showed Saturday that the countrys annual inflation rate reached 191.6 per cent and month-on-month inflation reached 30.7 per cent in June.

In 2008-2009 hyperinflation reached 500 billion per cent, according to the International Monetary Fund, and ravaged the country. At the time, 100 trillion Zimbabwean dollar banknotes were not enough to buy basic groceries.

The Monetary Policy Committee resolved to introduce gold coins into the market as an instrument that will enable investors to store value.

The gold coins will be minted by Fidelity Gold Refineries Limited and will be sold to the public through normal banking channels, said Dr. Mangudya.

Gold Coins: What’s The Difference Between Face Value And Actual Value

Those who find themselves entering the commemorative gold coin market may be surprised to find that a coin they just paid upwards of £1,000 for, is technically only worth £100. As far as banks are concerned, if you asked them for the full cash value of a British Gold Britannia coin, youll be entitled to the amount that the coin says it is worth.

What is the face value?

Luckily, this is only really the case in technicality. Nobodys ever likely to offer a commemorative coin like the Britannia or a Sovereign as payment for anything, and if you tried to claim its value in a bank theyd probably politely point you in the direction of a gold merchant.

But why is it that commemorative coins used as currency are worth so much less than their equivalent gold or silver content? Heres a quick trip through the history, tradition and economics that cause this disparity.

Inflation and the £1 Gold Sovereign

Unlike the Britannia, the Gold Sovereign doesnt have its face value recorded on the actual coin. It is nonetheless officially considered to be worth £1 in British currency. The reason for this is because when the Gold Sovereign was first minted to its current specifications in the early 19th century, the 7.98 grams of gold 22-carat gold that the coin contained would have been worth a pound.

International gold bullion coins

Other coins such as the Britannia, which were never based on a coin of circulating currency tend to choose a face value for stylistic purposes.

Gold Coins Vs Gold Bars When Do Bars Win

Gold coins worth $4,000 found in Bristol Salvation Army kettle

When comparing gold bars vs. gold coins, however, gold bars do have certain benefits of their own. You can usually tell the value of a particular quantity of gold bar very easily because the equivalent weight and purity will be inscribed onto the metal itself and the value of that metal is governed by the live gold spot price.

For those investors who want strictly to invest in the value of the gold rather than for its cultural and historical tradition, this is a good way of doing so. Youll be able to closely track the contemporary value of your gold, as it rises and falls, and be able to demand a reasonably specific price for the product upon sale.

Gold bars usually comprise 99.99 per cent pure gold. Since the main value of the product is its gold content, there isnt really much use for any other kind of metal being alloyed in there, so you can usually guarantee that a gold bar will be 24-carat gold. They come in sizes from as little as 1 gram to as large as 1 kilogram, meaning that you can invest as much or as little as you like at any one time, and at whatever speed suits you.

Paying Premiums On Gold Investments

Before we move on to look at the other advantages of investing in gold coins, we need to consider the thorny issue of premiums.

It’s true that, in percentage terms, you’ll pay a lower premium if you buy gold bars. By premium, we mean the extra charge that results from the cost of manufacturing, order processing and packing, delivery and insurance. As a 1kg gold bar is a large single item, the premium you’ll pay the bullion dealer, as a percentage of its overall price, is relatively small.

However, this benefit starts to diminish if you’re buying multiple smaller gold bars, such as several 1g or 5g bars, to benefit from greater flexibility on your gold investment. The order processing and packing elements will increase incrementally as you buy more bars, thereby accounting for a larger percentage of the overall price.

At this point, there’ll be a smaller difference in the premium you for gold bars vs gold coins. So your viewpoint on premiums really depends on your gold investment strategy: the more individual bars or coins you buy, the less difference there is.

Find The Actual Gold Weight Of Your Gold Coins

If youve heard the expression 14- or 24-karat gold, you may know the difference in consistency and quality of gold. When you sell gold, you sell it by its purity as well as its weight, and the closer a coin gets to 100% gold, the higher its value. If youre wondering how to sell gold coins, start with the actual gold weight , which is simply the raw weight multiplied by the purity. Its easy to weigh a coin , though a gold dealer will use a much more refined scale for the exact weight of the coin and its purity. Finding the purity, on the other hand, requires a bit more research. Check out online databases of coin values and purities and search by year, mint mark, and style of the coin.

Find The Red Book Price

Similar to the blue book, the red book helps when selling gold coins by providing information on individual coins rather than the wholesale price: if you find a coin listed for $100 in the red book but on sale for $10, its a great deal. By contrast, a coin listed for $15 in the red book but on sale for $10 may just be the dealer trying to clear out inventory. The red book helps to determine insurance premiums for very rare or valuable coins by calculating the specific price for one coin.

A Bad Time To Invest In Gold

In order to ascertain the investment merits of gold, let’s check its performance against that of the S& P 500 for the past 5 years . Gold has underperformed by quite a bit compared to the S& P 500 over this period, with the S& P index generating nearly a 100% in total returns compared to gold, which returned just 42.5% over the same period.

That said, the period of time that we look at is incredibly important. Gold, for example, outperformed the S& P 500 over the 10-year period from November 2002 to October 2012, with a total price appreciation of 441.5%. The S& P 500, on the other hand, appreciated by 58% over the same period.

The point here is that gold is not always a good investment. The best time to invest in almost any asset is when there is negative sentiment and the asset is inexpensive, providing substantial upside potential when it returns to favor, as indicated above.

Choosing Gold Bars Or Gold Coins

Which should you choose gold bars or gold coins? Both have their attractions for example, as gold investments they are exempt from VAT. Gold bars have their weight stamped on them, and you can ascertain the current price for gold at any time. However, their actual value when you sell them will depend on the best price you can get from a gold bullion dealer.

The same applies for gold coins, but they have two distinct advantages. One is that in addition to their intrinsic gold value, their collectable appeal will potentially increase their sale price. The second benefit of making an investment in gold coins, is that by choosing UK Sterling , you are exempt from Capital Gains Tax a bonus that gold bars cannot offer.

Ultimately, you may want to ‘hedge your bets’ and choose to spread your investment across both gold bars and gold coins, although this makes assessing the overall worth of your gold assets rather more complicated. If you are seeking a more straightforward option with reduced tax liabilities or have limited funds to invest, we would recommend putting your money into gold coins. It should not only lead to satisfying returns, but could also be the start of an absorbing collectable gold coins hobby.
