What is Gold Vermeil? & How to make sure Gold Vermeil Lasts

If youve been wearing a plated gold for some time, you should clean it to retain its luster, and always remember to put it off after each wear.

Hees how to clean vermeil using this method:

  • Soak your jewelry inside a solution containing mild soap
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals or detergents that can quickly scratch the gold surface
  • Use a soft cloth to dry the jewelry after washing
  • Is Gold Vermeil Real Gold

Like standard gold plating, gold vermeil is also real gold. AtMonica Vinader we use the highest percentage of gold alloy that canbe used to make jewellery, this being 18 carats. We adore goldvermeil and the pieces that can be created from it so much that weuse it in both our gold and rose gold jewellery collections.

    Gold Colored And Gold Washed

    Thank you, next.

Gold colored just means its the color of goldthere is zero gold anywhere on the piece.

And gold washed just means the amount of gold is a few decimals above zero. If a company uses this term, its because they cant legally even say its gold-plated.

Neither of these is gold jewelry in any sense of the word.

My recommendation: Avoid at all costs.

How To Get The Most Out Of Your Gold Vermeil Jewelry

mendlbarr: how to clean 14K and 24K gold vermeil...

Like most things in life, the better you care for something, the longer it lasts, and the same goes for your vermeil jewelry.

    Best Practices:

Avoid harsh chemicals. This one is easy, and one of the most common mistakes. Try to not apply body lotion, perfume, hairspray, and especially hand sanitizer while wearing your jewelry. The chemicals can interact with the metals and they just do not like each other.

Simple fix just finish off your getting ready routine by adding your jewelry at the end and slip off rings before using hand sanitizer.

Chemicals in general are a no-no, so that also includes cleaning products and pools. Gloves are your friend for more reason than one while cleaning, and just save the jewels for your newly sun-kissed skin after the swim.

Try your best to make it a habit of slipping off your rings when washing your hands, I know this is a tough one, and no judgment if you dont, but it does help longevity. While the soap is not going to hurt anything, it can build up a residue, and gemstones particularly do not like extreme temperature changes.

Lastly, you should always store your jewelry in its jewelry box or another airtight container. This helps two things: keeps the air out and dryness in and keeps them safe from hitting other jewelry or objects and getting scratched or tangled.

    Will Gold Vermeil Tarnish

ALL ABOUT GOLD PLATED JEWELRY | Gold Plated vs Gold Filled vs Gold Bonded vs Gold Vermeil |

Tarnishing is a chemical reaction that occurs when the other metals that are mixed with the gold and silver in fine jewelry come into contact with air and other various substances such as lotions, perfumes and oils on the skin and cause it to darken.

The base metal used for making vermeil is sterling silver. Sterling silver is composed of 97.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals.

So in short, yes, gold vermeil can tarnish but the good news is that this darkening is only a thin layer on the surface of the metal and can easily be removed and returned to its original sparkle. With a little care and maintenance the tarnishing can even be prevented so your special piece will last for years to come.

Mejuri’s Gold Vermeil Vs 14k Gold Jewelry

Mejuri’s gold vermeil is made from a thick layer of 18k solid gold on sterling silver. It has a much thicker layer of gold than regular gold plating. Vermeil still tarnishes, so the pieces need to stay away from sweat and water.

After wearing the necklaces on my bare skin last summer, both pieces quickly began to oxidize. My Mejuri customer service rep recommended that I buff them with the black pouch that came in the box. It worked to a certain degree, but my Twin necklace was still in pretty bad shape, and they offered to replace it with another one, which came in the mail pretty quickly. I have to say, Mejuri’s customer service is excellent. Their jewelry have two-year warranties. The reps are prompt with emailing back, and they will find a solution for your issue.

Recently, I took out the Tarot necklace after not wearing it for months and noticed that the oxidization got worse. It wouldn’t buff away. I did a little Googling and read that toothpaste is a good jewelry cleaner general. I don’t know the science behind this, but it worked!

What I did was squeezed some toothpaste on the surface I wanted to clean, let it sit for a minute, then scrubbed with an old toothbrush.

I am a little concerned that if I keep scrubbing the necklace this way, I’ll eventually wear off the gold plating. Both necklaces are very cute and layerable, but I decided that gold vermeil is too high maintenance for me.

    Gold Plated Vs Gold Filled

Gold plated pieces have a thin layer of gold on the outside with a base layer of a metal alloy. The metal base layer of gold vermeil pieces is always Sterling silver while gold plated pieces can have any type of base metal. The same goes for gold filled. Gold plated pieces may have a higher quality base metal than gold filled pieces which often have a low quality base metal. Many companies use gold plating or gold filled jewelry to hide a cheaper or low-end material underneath. Vermeil pieces hold their value because the base metal is Sterling Silver.

Figuring out what type of gold jewlery is the best option for you is a personal choice. You must take into account your personal style, your budget, and your allergies or sensitivities. Do you prefer low maintenance jewelry or are you okay with a little extra TLC? Answering all these questions can help you figure out what type of gold jewelry works best for you.

How Do I Remove Tarnish From Gold Vermeil

How To Clean Tarnished Gold Vermeil

The beauty of vermeil is that it rarely tarnishes. Occasionally if it does though, and this usually happens when it’s exposed to moist air or a chemical it doesn’t like for too long it will appear as a brown or dark spot and it’s super easy to remove. Simply gently rub with a soft clean cloth and it should clear it right up! Yay for vermeil!

If you’re seeing a grey filmy, scaly-like substance, that means your jewelry piece is not vermeil and has a brass base. Brass is what can grow that kind of reactive tarnish scale which can only be removed by buffing

How Can I Tell What Type Of Gold Jewellery I Am Buying

Although price should be an indicator, it can be difficult to tell the difference between solid gold, gold vermeil and gold plated jewellery, so its always best to check for hallmarks. Heres what you should look out for:

    Solid gold

Solid gold jewellery has fineness stamps which the percentage of parts of pure gold out of 1,000 parts metal. For example 9ct gold will have a stamp of 375 , 14ct gold will have a stamp of 583 and 18ct gold will have a stamp of 750, .

    Gold vermeil

A 925 stamp on your gold jewellery guarantees that the underlying metal is sterling silver. This acts as a guarantee that the piece contains at least 925 parts of pure silver out of 1,000 parts of metal. This however does not guarantee the thickness of the gold plating or the carat level of the gold plate, the seller will need to confirm this. Anything with less than 1.5 microns of 10 carat gold plating, is not gold vermeil. .

    Gold plated

Gold plated jewellery is usually marked GP, GEP or HGP . Sometimes these letters also follow the carat level, e.g. 14K GP, means it is 14 carat gold plated over a base metal. Once again, the seller will need to confirm the actual thickness of the plating.

    Gold filled

Gold filled jewellery is usually marked RGP or RG . It can also be marked with 1/20, which means it is 5% gold. And as with gold plating, the carat level may also be included, e.g. 1/20 14K RG. In Australia the most common gold stamps found on Gold filled jewellery are 1/20 9ct GF.

    Use Gold Expert Cleaning Services

Sometimes, we get overwhelmed with the volume of information on the internet.

If youre still not sure of how to maintain your gold vermeil, you can hire the services of an expert.

With a few bucks, they will help polish all the areas that are dark or tarnished.

Some can re-plate it for you with gold, making your vermeil look new, like when you first purchased it.

If you have used toothpaste, silver polish, or another cleaner and the jewelry looks dull, mix the dishwashing liquid and warm water solution and submerge the jewelry for five minutes. Use a soft cotton cloth to wipe away the film left by the cleaners. Rub gently to prevent removing the gold!

If the worst has happened and the gold plating has worn away so that the base metal is exposed, you can have jewelry replated. Consult with a reputable jeweler about the costs and the feasibility of replating your piece. It is difficult to replate chains and the jeweler must be skilled in preparing the base metal surface of any piece before replating.

Is Vermeil The Same As Gold Plated

Gold vermeil undergoes a similar process to gold plated jewelry. However, they are not exactly the same. So what is gold plated? While gold vermeil has a legal definition under US law gold plated jewelry can be any type of jewelry that is plated in gold. Gold vermeil typically lasts longer and is less likely to fade or tarnish. Gold plated jewelry has no industry standard for thickness and therefore different companies can provide a wide range of quality.

    What Does Gold Vermeil Mean

The gold vermeil meaning is enveloped in history. It actually comes from the Latin word vermis which means worm. Then, with time, the French language morphed it into the words vermeil and vermillion. Thats because the French goldsmiths first used mercury in their process to make vermeil. This gave it a bright red vermillion shine, just like the dyes that came from the worm-like insect, the chochineal. So, next time you wear your gold vermeil jewelry, you can imagine the centuries of time that came before and that will continue to come. Isnt it beautiful to be part of such a fabric of human invention and to pass that on in your family? Its almost more special than pure gold. After all, it took centuries of trial and error to transform the vermeil precious metal into your gold vermeil jewelry.

    Gold Electroplated And Gold Plated

    What Is Gold Vermeil?

These terms are mostly the same, except electroplated has less gold than plated.

Gold-plated jewelry uses any type of metalusually something cheap, like brass or copperand coats it with a microscopic layer of gold.

I mean microscopic literally. The legal limit for gold electroplated is 0.175 microns, 1/500th the thickness of a sheet of printer paper.

Your skin wears down that thin gold layer in a few months, and almost all household objects can scratch it off. Thats why gold-plated jewelry has nearly zero resale value.

My recommendation: Not bad if youre looking for wear-it-once jewelry, but a poor choice for something you plan to keep for a while.

Gold Plated Vs Vermeil Vs Gold Filled

Don’t worry if you find the terminology confusing. That’s because there are actually only 4 different types to remember, in descending order of price: pure gold, gold vermeil, gold filled and gold plated. When comparing gold vermeil vs gold plated, simply note that vermeil uses pure silver for the core. On the flip side, gold plated uses copper or bronze. Also, the thickness of the gold is smaller at 3 microns versus at least 5 microns for vermeil. On the other hand, gold vermeil vs gold filled has a similar gold thickness. Although, gold filled usually has 14 carat gold to cover the copper or bronze. Vermeil gold though, uses 18 carat gold which also means it doesnt tarnish. The less pure gold is, the more likely it will tarnish.Last but not least, of course you can always buy pure gold jewelry which is as durable as gold vermeil jewelry. Nevertheless, the price isnt quite the same. Moreover, if history and human workmanship is your thing then perhaps gold vermeil offsets itself as slightly more unique.
