While yellow gold is the most common option, 14k white and rose gold chains are also widely available. The metals used to make the chain ultimately determine its color.

How Much Is 14k Scrap Gold Worth

Well, there is a price difference between the stock price and the price you can get paid. You cant expect to be paid the stock price if you sell to a dealer. Expect a lower price. Very reliable dealers take about 10% off the stock price. But be careful most gold dealers, pawn shops, and jewelers offer little money for your unwanted scrap gold. Find out on your own how much your items are worth before you shop around. All you need is a common scale and good eyes to make out the gold marking. If you know that you own 14K gold for sure, you just need the scale to determine the weight. Below you can find a price table for 14K gold with the dollar amount per ounce, dwt, and gram. We highly recommend not selling for less than the prices stated in this table.

What Should I Expect The Markup To Be

To have a rule of thumb on what mark-up to expect, think a minimum of double. If the cost of a chain is $500.00 expect to pay $1,000.00 or more. A machine made chain will have a cost of the gold, plus alloyed metals, plus labor to make it.

Earrings, rings, bracelets, are all more complex to create than machine made gold chains. So the mark-up will be more just for that aspect of your jewelry.

Any retail mark-up of course takes into account rents, marketing, staffing and we just won’t go there. Just know that the reason you can’t get it at the price the jeweler does is because you aren’t buying a kilo at a time from a gold manufacturer.

Determining The Total Weight Of Your Gold Necklace

To find the absolute amount of pure gold in your necklace, you will need to weigh it.

Before you do that, dont forget to remove any stones so as not to artificially inflate the calculated weight of the gold alloy in the piece.

Weigh your necklace on a scale, and record the weight in grams or ounces.

If you need to convert the weight into troy ounces, remember that 1 gram is equal to 0.03215 troy ounces, and 1 ounce equals 0.91146 troy ounces.

Some jewelers also use pennyweights as units of measurement, so you should know that 1 troy ounce is equal to 20 pennyweights .

What Determines The Value Of 14k Gold

How Much Is a 14k Gold Ring Worth at a Pawn Shop?

The value of 14-karat gold depends on the amount of pure gold in the alloy.

This means that in order to determine how much an item made of 14K gold is worth , you need to find out its weight and, considering the alloys purity, figure out the amount of pure gold in it.

Once you know how much pure gold you have, you can use current gold market prices to value it.

Determining The Value Of A Gold Chain

The price of a high-quality 14k gold chain can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. The weight of the chain and, therefore, the amount of gold it contains is a primary factor in determining the pieces value. To determine the golds value, use a precise scale to weigh the chain in grams. Then since 14k gold is 58.3% gold, you need to multiply the weight by this percentage. For example, if you have a 14k gold chain that weighs 27 grams, you would multiply 27 by 0.583 to determine that it contains 15.741 grams of gold.

From there, multiply the weight by the current value of gold. If gold is currently worth $59.03 per gram, the value of the gold in your necklace would be about $929.19. Keep in mind, though, that this is only the value of the gold and doesnt account for other factors.

K Vs 18k Gold: A Side

14k vs 18k gold: Which one between the two you should consider? Investing in gold plays a vital role in any investment portfolio, especially if you want to diversify your assets. Compared to other precious metals, gold has held its value for decades. It remains a tangible investment and a proven hedge against inflation.

Experts agree that gold investment increases in value when higher inflation and economic instability prevail. The reason is that the value of gold has no relation to the currencies performance and other investments in the stock market. In July 2020, gold prices increased to record levels due to growing economic uncertainties.

If you wish to expand your investment portfolio by buying gold, you may wonder which option works best for you. While some prefer investing in bullion coins, others consider jewelry.

Buying 14K or 18K gold has proven to be an excellent investment option for many people. Keep reading to discover the differences between 14K and 18K gold and which one to add to your investment portfolio.

    My Gold Selling Experience

I recently sold some gold and went with a combination of the first two strategies here. I knew that I would be going to a few pawn shops since I had heard that they pay more than the We Buy Gold places. But first, I went to one of the pop-up stores. They offered me pennies on the dollar. About what I expected. Sure, the process only took a few minutes, and they did try to confuse me by telling me the amount I had in penny weight. As I got up to leave, they asked me how much I was looking for. What I had was 14 karat, and I told them I wanted to be paid $20 per gram for my gold. I didnt have much, and I knew I probably would never get this amount, but it is a great negotiating technique to start high.

Then, a strange thing occurred. This person gave me a card which guaranteed me 10% better than any other offer I received out there. I tucked that in my wallet and left.

Next, I went to a few pawn shops. Dont worry, they are OK to go into. The ones I found were pretty clean as well. I went to one chain pawn shop and a few mom and pop shops. What I found was that the national chains will offer you considerably more for your gold because they have more financial backing.

So you see, I more than doubled the money I would have gotten by just doing a little bit of research and leg work. If I had been more fickle, I probably could have forced the 110% promise, but I was happy with the $375 overall.

    Additional Factors That Impact Cost

While the weight of the gold is one of the primary factors used when establishing the price of a piece of gold jewelry, it is not the only one. Unless you are trying to sell a piece of broken jewelry for scrap, the cost of a gold chain will never be the same as the value of the gold it contains.

Some gold chain styles are more difficult to produce than others, and these more complex designs are, of course, more expensive. A simple box chain almost always costs less than intricate styles like Cuban link and Figaro chains.

The addition of gemstones increases the prices too. An iced-out chain comes with a much heftier price than a plain one. And, of course, adding a pendant increases the cost. Custom jewelry is more expensive than off-the-shelf products, too, due to the additional skill and labor required to make it.

When shopping, dont forget to account for retail markup. Retailers need to charge to cover the cost of the materials, the labor to make the piece, employee wages and more. If a jeweler were to sell a necklace for the same cost as the value of the gold, they likely would not have any room to turn a profit. In fact, they would probably lose money on the detail. At a minimum, retailers usually charge double the value of the gold to ensure theres room for profit.
