House Training Your Puppy :

One of the most important parts of your house-training is the restriction to full house use. It may not seem good, but it is the best first step to your training. The lesser space to move the lesser chances of doing mistakes leads towards a victory goal. Apart from a cleaner path to your goal, your dog will also learn to treat the house as their own den.

According to your dogs training schedule, you may need the below-mentioned items:

  • A suitable crib
  • Leash plus collar
  • Playpen that has baby gates or barriers to stop puppy from coming out of the pen
  • A tarpaulin sheet or plastic drop cloth
  • If possible puppy pads, or else a stack of newspapers
  • Dog poppy bags and poop scooper
  • Small food treats to reward your puppy
  • Cleaning products like bathing soap, shampoo, floor cleaners etc.
  • A UV torch to highlight during dog urine time

How Much Should You Feed Your Golden Retriever Puppy

How much you feed your puppy depends on what your veterinarian says and what the label on the dog food says.

Its tough to make general statements like, feed your puppy one cup per day, because 1) all puppies are different, and 2) different foods have different caloric densities.

One cup of Brand X food may have 300 calories per cup, while Brand Y has 400 calories per cup.

And heres an example of why it depends on the individual puppy

When we first got our puppy, Oliver, we were feeding him what the package told us to feed him.

During a vet visit our veterinarian said he looked too lethargic for a puppy his age , and he recommended we feed him a little more.

So when deciding how much to feed your puppy, read the label on your food and talk to your veterinarian to see whats best for them.

As far as how often to feed your puppy, this same rule applies.

Most people feed their puppies three times per day, and then eventually transition to two times per day when theyre a little older.

At this point, theyre not growing as much, so they dont need to eat as frequently, plus it will usually help them poop less!

For us, we fed Oliver three times per day until he was a little over a year old.

Thats when we switched to adult dog food and changed to feeding him two times per day.

Overgrown Golden Retriever Puppy

Pedigree puppy food ?? Good or not so good ?

This is characterized by an overly fast rate of growth. Largely a case of overfeeding your puppy, it is not good for its health. Obesity in puppies leads to lots of health risks. Moreover, dogs find it very difficult to shed this extra weight. Overweight puppies or adult dogs suffer skeletal problems, hip dysplasia, and issues with their joints.

These are reasons enough for golden retriever owners to follow the feeding guidelines in order to keep their puppies at just the right weight.

When To Switch Puppy To Adult Food

Once you know when your puppy will reach maturity, you can decide when to switch to adult food.

If your puppy will be full grown at 12 months, you can start transitioning him to an adult formula around his first birthday. It can take 7 to 10 days to make the switch, so youll want to plan for that before you start.

Bentleysmom said:I know this is an old thread but I have the same question now. Because Bentley weighed in at 20.9 lbs at 8 weeks I’m concerned about his joints. Would it be safe to switch to adult food now? . I just don’t want too much pressure on his joints. Thanks.*Vet suggests keeping him on puppy food until at least 5 months but he also agrees he’s growing too fast. He eats total of 1 1/2 C per day spread over 3 meals.

Max’s Dad said:I am probably in the minority here. I do not believe in the slow growth idea. I think how quickly a puppy grows has more to do with genetics than how much he is fed. More important for his bones and joints is that the dog get proper and sufficient nutrition to keep up with his growth. We fed Max Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy until he was 15 or 16 months old. He continued growing until he was nearly two years old. The Eukanuba has fewer calories per cup than the food he is on now–Acana Wild Prairie.

Wet Foods Vs Dry Foods

3 GOLDEN RETRIEVER PUPPY DOGS FEEDING ROUTINE!

Both wet and dry foods are the most common types of dog foods you will find in the market. They are available in commercial quantities and come with different formulations for your dog breed, age, and size.

One of the many reasons dog owners prefer wet and dry foods is that they can easily access and store them. Plus, they contain most of the nutrients that your dog needs for growth.

The major difference between wet and dry foods is the moisture or water content. Wet foods contain more moisture than dry foods.

With dry food, pets eat lots of calories in small quantities. In contrast, your pet must eat twice or triple times as much wet food to gain similar calorific values as dry foods.

Wet Foods

Wet foods are suitable for young Golden Retrievers that are just weaning off their mothers milk. Because they contain about 60 to 85 percent moisture content, your pet can easily adjust to eating wet foods.

If your dogs are elderly, picky, have problems with chewing, or drink very little water, wet foods may also be your best bet. The moisture in the wet food will hydrate your pet and provide the nutrients they need.

Because wet foods are usually more palatable, your dogs may eat larger portions per meal. And due to the high water content, they need to take in more quantities per meal to get the ideal amount of nutrients they need.

Here are some of the downsides of wet foods.

Is Leaving A Puppy With Its Mother Too Long Problematic

First of all, leaving a puppy with its mother longer than necessary isnt as harmful as taking it away too early as long as its socialized well. And this is the important thing when it comes to leaving a puppy in the nest for too long.

A puppy must be introduced to as many sights, sounds, environments, people and other dogs and animals as possible before they reach 14 weeks of age. Anything you dont want a dog to be scared of they must be exposed to in this early part of their life.

This 14 week window of opportunity is a time where a puppy has little fear and instead has heightened curiosity that compels it to explore and test things out. After 14 weeks, as a natural instinct for survival in the wild, the puppy will begin to fear new things it hasnt already experienced.

The first 14 weeks is also the time when a puppy will form its strongest bonds with people and other animals. And so for the best possible relationship and strongest bond between your puppy and you, this is a time when you want your puppy living with you, seeing your entire family and social network so your puppy truly integrates and feels a part of the pack of humans around it.

So think to yourself, if you get a puppy at 8 weeks of age, you have 6 weeks to take them to the shopping mall, the park, the pet shop, to meet as many people as possible, get them in the car, on the beach, in a swimming pool etc. get them at 12 weeks and you have only 14 days!

    Choosing The Right Formula

It is better to feed those formulas to your pups which have been specifically developed for growing puppies. If the formula has been developed specifically for the growing needs of puppies, it will be mentioned on the package.

You should avoid those foods which do not have meat listed as the first ingredient. If, for instance, you see a package with corn or meat by-products listed as the first ingredient, you should not purchase it.

Interested In Training Your Golden Retriever The Right Way

If you havent trained your golden retriever properly, then this is the perfect time to start. Whatever bad behavior your shepherd has, whether its barking at night or other bad behaviors, using the right training program is the key to having an obedient and happy pup.

The training program I love and highly recommend is Brain Training For Dogs.

With Brain Training For Dogs youll save yourself a ton of time and effort. Instead of banging your head against the wall trying to figure out why your dog wont listen, youll follow a path that has been tried, tested, and most importantly, thats given proven results. Not to mention the fact, youll be able to fit the course around your schedule, not fit your schedule around a trainer or obedience class.

So instead of worrying about whether theyre going to be well-behaved or not, youll only have to worry about how much fun youll have with them!

And in most cases its still going to be:

    • Cheaper than hiring a professional.
    • Cheaper than replacing everything they might break.
    • And definitely cheaper than a lawsuit against you, if they decide to bite someone.

Just imagine how great it will feel to finally be able to trust your border collie completely and never worry whether theyll be naughty or not. Instead, youll have the peace of mind that you have a well-behaved pup, and the boundaries you set for them, will always be there, EVEN IF YOURE NOT.
