Manufacturers And Talc Brands Defend Against Personal Injury Claims
People filed lawsuits against makers of major brands of talcum powder products, the largest of which is Johnson & Johnson. They also sued Imerys Talc and other mining companies that supply these manufacturers with raw talc.
Manufacturers say they intend to vigorously defend against lawsuits. Imerys Talc, Colgate-Palmolive and other companies have attempted to settle some cases confidentially. For example, in July 2018, Colgate-Palmolive paid a confidential settlement to Paul Garcia, who said he developed mesothelioma after using baby powder made by Mennen, a company previously tied to Colgate-Palmolive.
Johnson & Johnson has made no mention of a blanket settlement for its thousands of lawsuits thus far, despite the large verdicts against it.
The Company believes that it has strong grounds on appeal to overturn these verdicts, Johnson & Johnson said in its second quarter form 10-Q. The Company has established an accrual for defense costs only in connection with product liability litigation associated with body powders containing talc.
Is It Safe To Put Gold Bond Powder On Your Balls

I recently wrote an article listing the best ball and body powders for men, and while Gold Bond wasnt on the list, I have been receiving questions from readers asking me if its safe to put Gold Bond powder on their balls.
Even though Gold Bond powder didnt make my best ball and body powders list, it remains one of the most popular body powders for men due to its effectiveness, availability, and affordability.
And although Im not really a fan of Gold Bond powder there are much better ball powders available in my opinion I decided to do a little research on this body powder that has seemingly been around forever. 1882 to be exact.
Heres what I wanted to find out:
Whats in Gold Bond powder?
And is it safe for men to douse their ball sacks in the stuff?
Since I had a bottle of Gold Bond powder on hand I was able to take a quick look at the ingredient list and see exactly whats inside.
Whats In This: Gold Bond Body Powder
All 8 ingredients in Americas favorite ball powder, explained
Were often told that you should never eat anything if you dont recognize everything on the ingredients list. But since most of us have no idea what xanthan gum or potassium benzoate areor more importantly, what theyre doing to our bodieswere decoding the ingredients in the many things Americans put in themselves with the help of an expert. This edition: Gold Bond Body Powder, which is made from eight separate ingredients that weve broken down in the exact order they appear on the bottle.
1) Talc: This ingredient is widely used in baby powders and body powders, since it absorbs moisture well and helps cut down on friction, which in turn prevents rashes. Unfortunately, talc has a bad reputation for being carcinogenic, which prompted Gold Bond to produce a similar product that utilizes a safer, cornstarch-based alternative. You can check out that product here.
Heres why that cornstarch-based alternative was necessary: In its natural mineral form, some talc contains asbestos, a substance known to cause cancer in and around the lungs when inhaled. Despite the fact that modern cosmetic products are believed to contain asbestos-free talc, a 2014 study found that one historic brand of cosmetic talcum powder released inhalable asbestos fibers into the air when applied, which were then linked to the formation of pleural mesothelioma .

How Good Is The Evidence
Most of the evidence comes from a type of study known as a case-control study. For these studies, researchers recruit two groups of women women with ovarian cancer and women without ovarian cancer . All of the women are asked to recall whether they used talcum powder in the past, and if so, how often and how it was used. These studies cannot tell us for sure that using talcum powder causes ovarian cancer, but they can tell us if women who report using the powder in the genital area are more likely to develop ovarian cancer.

How Could Talc Cause Ovarian Cancer
Talc is often found in the same places in the earth as asbestos, so asbestos may be contaminating talc when it is mined.14 Asbestos is known to cause cancer in humans. In 2019, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found that a bottle of Johnson & Johnson baby powder tested positive for asbestos.15 The FDA gathered a team of experts from 8 different federal agencies, and these experts developed recommendations for standardizing testing talc products for asbestos.15,16
However, this team of experts said that it is irrelevant whether the products contain asbestos because both asbestos and similar minerals are suspected of causing similar pathological outcomes.16 In fact, microscopic photos of talc show that it can look very similar to asbestos, regardless of whether it is contaminated with asbestos. The team of experts asserted that talc, even without any asbestos present, is suspected to cause health problems. One reason that researchers believe genital application of talc can cause ovarian cancer is that talc can enter the ovaries and cause inflammation, and inflammation can cause cancer.17,18

Class Action Lawsuits For Cancer Risks Related To Talcum Powder
Most talcum powder suits have been individual personal injury cases, but some class action suits have also been filed in the past. Some of these class action cases have been dismissed and others have been absorbed into other cases.
Rather than rolling all of the ovarian cancer cases together into a single class action lawsuit, courts have decided to consolidate these cases into what is known as a Multidistrict Litigation.
A multidistrict litigation case is when cases from around the country which share a common factor, in this case ovarian cancer and talc usage, have all of their pretrial hearings and the discovery process managed by one judge in one court.
Cases are handled individually but, because the same judge oversees the pretrial motions and discovery, that judge becomes an expert in the types of cases involved in the MDL. Cases which do not settle or are not dismissed during the MDL phase are sent back to the original court where the case was filed for a trial.

Beauty Brands Moving Away From Talc As Us Cancer Lawsuits Mount
Chanel, Revlon and LOreal are the biggest cosmetics manufacturers quietly moving away from using talc in some products.
Chanel, Revlon and LOreal, three of the biggest brands in cosmetics, are quietly moving away from using talc in some products as United States cancer lawsuits and consumer concerns mount.
Luxury beauty company Chanel has removed talc from a loose face powder and dropped a talc body powder because of negative perceptions around the mineral, court documents reviewed by Reuters News Agency show.
Revlon Inc removed talc from its body products, and LOreal SA is exploring alternatives for the mineral, those companies told Reuters.
The moves come amid a reappraisal of talc in body powders and cosmetics by consumers, regulators and manufacturers. Talc which is sometimes found in the same rock as asbestos, a potent carcinogen is used in thousands of cosmetic and personal care products to absorb moisture, prevent caking and add softness.
Thousands of cancer lawsuits, some dating back to 2013, have been filed against body-powder market leader Johnson & Johnson . Allegations that asbestos contamination caused plaintiffs cancers began in 2017. Other makers of talc powders also face suits, including Revlon, Chanel and Avon, securities filings and court records show.
Scrutiny of talc products intensified after a 2018 Reuters investigation. The company has disputed Reuters report and maintains its powders are safe and asbestos-free.
Lawsuits Over Talc And Cancer
Since 2014, Johnson & Johnson has defended its talcum powder in lawsuits brought by families of women who had used their talcum powder products and died from ovarian cancer. In February 2016, the courts ruled in favor of the family of a woman who died of ovarian cancer at 62 years old. Particles of talc were found in her ovaries, which were removed after her cancer diagnosis. The courts overturned the ruling just a few months later based on jurisdictional issues that were not related to the science.19 In another matter, a California woman with ovarian cancer won a $70 million dollar against Johnson & Johnson. She continues to fight for fair warning labels on the products it sells. A powder sold by the brand Assured already carries such a warning: Frequent application of talcum powder in the female genital area may increase the risk of ovarian cancer.20
There is some evidence that men may also be harmed by talc. For example, the courts ruled in favor of a New Jersey man because the powder had caused an asbestos-related lung cancer known as mesothelioma. In this case, the talcum powder was likely contaminated with asbestos. Despite the jurys decision, Johnson & Johnson continues to deny claims that their product contains asbestos or that it causes cancer. However, the court held that exposure to asbestos from another source was not a likely cause of his cancer.21

Talcum Powder & Ovarian Cancer
Talcum is primarily made using oxygen, silicon, and magnesium. Once combined, this is ground into a powder and is often used to absorb moisture and reduce uncomfortable amounts of friction. As a result, many people use this product to prevent rashes and to keep specific areas of the body dry. While this product can be useful for such reasons, this product can become extremely dangerous and, in the worst cases, fatal if the product is used near the genitals. Research has shown that these harmful agents can become trapped in the ovaries, resulting in serious inflammation, which can contribute to the growth of ovarian cancer cells.
According to theCancer Prevention Research Journal, when using a talc-based powder on or near the genitals, a woman increases her chances of ovarian cancer by 41%.
According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of ovarian cancer include the following:
- Abdominal bloating or swelling
- Constipation and bowel movement changes
- Frequent urination

Johnson & Johnsons Baby Powder
Johnson & Johnson was founded in 1886 and began selling its in 1894. Its baby powder became one of its most important products. Talcum powder helped prevent newborns skin from irritation, friction and diaper rash.
Talc is the core ingredient in Johnson & Johnsons original baby powder. Johnson & Johnson profited greatly because they successfully convinced the public that their talcum powder was not only safeit was an essential part of caring for newborns.
Documents released during recent lawsuits revealed trace amounts of cancerous materials were found in samples of Johnson & Johnsons talcum powder throughout the 20th century. The company ignored the claims, but lawsuits in the early 21st century have further linked the companys baby powder to cancer.
Today, Johnson & Johnson sells 4 different versions of its baby powder. Although 3 of these are made with cornstarch and other ingredients, its standard baby powder is still made with talc.

What Expert Agencies Say About Talcum Powder And Ovarian Cancer
The International Agency for Research on Cancer, a division of the World Health Organization , considers genital talc use as possibly carcinogenic to humans.
But U.S. regulatory and research agencies arent convinced. The National Cancer Institute says the weight of evidence does not support a link between talc exposure and ovarian cancer.
The American Cancer Society says the effects of talcum powder on ovarian cancer risk are unclear but given talcs widespread use more research is needed to determine if the increased risk is real.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration also says evidence of a causal effect is lacking. But it continues to research and monitor the issue amid a continuing influx of adverse event reports related to talcum powder use.
